What the boot protects
Dirt, water and road grime are kept away from the rack and inner joints. When a boot fails, contamination causes faster wear and corrosion.
How to inspect
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Cracks, tears, splits | visible damage in the rubber |
| Boot condition | dry; fluid or grease inside means a problem |
| Flexibility | brittle or very soft rubber has degraded |
What to do
- Boot split, rack dry and tight: replace the boot kit.
- Boot split with play or fluid: replace the rack.
- Fluid returns after cleaning: replace the rack.
