The seven checks
- Confirm the symptom comes from the rack, not tyres, bearings or alignment.
- Check inner and outer tie-rod ends for play.
- Check both boots for splits and oil inside.
- Check the steering column and universal joints for play.
- Check hoses, fittings and the reservoir for leaks.
- Check the pump and belt on hydraulic systems.
- Verify the exact application: OEM number, LHD or RHD, hydraulic or electric, year and trim.
After replacement
- Have the wheel alignment checked — replacing the rack or tie rods changes toe.
- Bleed hydraulic systems before driving.
- Road test for noise, even assistance, correct return-to-centre and no warning lights.
Cautions
- Some electric systems need a scan-tool steering-angle calibration after replacement — confirm before ordering.
- Do not condemn the rack while any check above is unresolved.
- Torque values and procedures follow the manufacturer service manual.
